Establishment of safe and secure radioactive waste store (project)
Temporary Storage of Orphan and disused sources and radionuclide contaminant materials

The LAEC has installed a temporary store for radioactive waste. Orphan sources are found mainly in scrap material. They are identified and brought to LAEC for necessary laboratory measurements and to be stored safely.
The following services are offered by the RWS :
  • Receipt of orphan sources found, condition them when possible, and temporarily store them
  • Manage and organize temporary store in LAEC (present sources, equipment, lists)
  • Retain archive for inventory of waste, relevant lists and forms, mission, projects, certificates, reports?
  • Estimate the possible radioactive waste that may arise from the present practices
  • Prepare radioactive waste management reports on demand
  • Carry out necessary trainings for involved staff
Establishment of safe and secure radioactive waste store (project)

Within the frame work of technical cooperation project with the IAEA : (Establishing a National Safe Temporary Storage Site at the Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission for Orphan Sources and Radioactive Waste), the LAEC is reconstructed some areas within the building to establish a national radioactive waste store. The outcome of the project will be:
  • Reconstruction of the floor for areas to be used for conditioning and storage. This includes the building infrastructure, and the special specifications needed for radioactive waste management (paint, floor material, fire isolation, ventilation, conditioning, etc?
  • Equipping the store with necessary tools, equipment and material for performing necessary works of conditioning and storage
  • Establish a complete documentary system for work and archive I think it should be for which includes guidelines, instructions, inventory, forms, charts, records, questionnaires, etc?/li>
  • Provide guidelines and trainings for staff in relevant facilities on demand
The establishment of this National store has the objective to provide conditioning and storage for radioactive wastes from relevant facilities upon request. This mainly covers: Molybdenum generators, medical short lived radioactive material used in Nuclear Medicine, disused radioactive sources which supplier would not take away for a legal reason, etc...
Consultancy and advisory for safe and secure conditioning and storing for radioactive waste at users facility

  • Consultancy and Advisory for safe and secure conditioning and storage at the facilities premises
  • Provide conditioning and storage on site on the owner premises.
  • Provide complete study for radioactive waste management for facilities upon request.
  • Provide advice for on-site conditioning and storage, including performing the actual work upon request.
